Everything you need to know about umpiring...
Who can umpire?
Anyone with an understanding of the rules and is passionate about umpiring.
At Woolwich we only allow umpires of age the 14 and older as umpires must be two years or older than the grade they umpire unless they hold a National badge; and WNC’s teams begin at 13 years of age.
When beginning your umpiring journey with WNC at ERNA, you must undertake a UDP course which spans across a 6-week period. Prior to the 6-week period, umpires must sit the Netball NSW umpire accreditation exam. You must score 70% or above to be eligible for the UDP program.

Umpiring Uniform
All umpires MUST wear a white top when umpiring. This white top can be either worn over a white skirt/ shorts/ pants, a WNC dress or WNC tracksuit pants.
Leggings, Sweatpants and Jeans are NOT permitted for umpiring, and could lead to a refusal of umpiring and consequently forfeiting of games.
Appropriate footwear MUST be worn. Converse, Vans, Open-toe shoes and similar styles are NOT permitted.
For Finals, umpires MUST wear all white; failure to do so will lead in a refusal of umpiring.
Umpire signing on
Umpires must sign on 20 minutes prior to the commencement of the game to the Control Centre (Brush Farm) or Umpires Table (Meadowbank) to receive court allocation.
Each umpire MUST know the following details about the team for which they are umpiring:
Badges and Awards for Umpires
When umpiring you can receive different levels of awards/ badges that help you progress in umpiring higher grades and age groups. The Awards/ Badges are as Follows:
Grade Minimum Umpiring Standards:
15/1s and Under - Strong Development Umpire or ERNA Encouragement Award
Cadet 2 and Under - ERNA Encouragement
Cadet 1 - National C Badge & ERNA Encouragement moving towards National C Badge.
C & D Division - National C Badge
B Division - National B Badge
A1s & A2s - Strong National C Badge or B Badge.
Night competition umpiring
During Night Competition WNC does NOT have Umpire convenors, therefore it is dependent upon individual teams to organise and pay the umpire.
If your umpire is NOT able to umpire a game, it is the responsibility of the team to find a replacement.
AT ERNA the umpiring system is neutral = you are NOT allowed to umpire your own team or grade.
Please email Maddy if you have any questions regarding umpiring! Our 2023 UDP is at capacity, however if you are interested in umpiring for Woolwich Netball in the future please email [email protected]
